Let's play the Street Name Game! We've uncovered a 1928 map that shows the early development of our neighborhood as well as the former names to some of our streets:

  • Bagley was Lenkill Ave.
  • Beverly Dr. was Watseka Ave.
  • Beverlywood was known as both Adams Blvd. & Emmalee St. at different times.
  • Canfield was Delmar Ave. south of National (and was also once called Tecumsen Ave.) and was also once called Tecumsen.
  • Castle Heights Ave. was named Castle Ave.
  • Castle Heights Ave. (at the triangle) was named Fontana Place in the 1920's.
  • Cattaraugus Ave. is an Iroguois term that actually means "stinking banks".
  • Kincardine Ave. was named Ivy Street.
  • Robertson was Arnaz Ave.
  • Vicar St. was Donker Ave.
  • W. 24th St. was called Kelson
  • W. 25th St. was called Henry

Some other fun facts about our neighborhood as it developed are:

  • The City of Los Angeles border used to go right through our neighborhood back in 1915.
  • We were an area which included hills, bean fields, a golf course, and the military academy.
  • Dating back to 1928, Shelby Dr. was one of the earliest paved streets in the area because Henry Culver (founder of Culver City) had the entrance to his Club Dr. residence on Shelby, although many of the other local roads were dirt.
